A snapshot of Todolella

La Todolella is a small town in the Els Ports region, shielded by an old medieval castle. It keeps all the charm of inland Castellón, with its buildings full of history, “fiestas” and traditions and a wide variety of food choices...

La Todolella’s main sources of income are strongly attached to its past: the hand production of canvas embroidered espadrilles, cold pork, cereals and almond trees.

A historic vision
In the 11th century the town was a Muslim farm, which was conquered by Blasco d’Alagon’s troops and later given away by James I to Ramón de Calvera.

Interesting places
Entering its narrow streets, the plaza Mayor is worth a stop. The town hall is located there, in an 18th century building characterised by a medieval depressed arch. Next to it is the San Bartolomé church, which has an 18th century altarpiece.

The town of La Todolella is situated to the side of castle which was once the stronghold of a lord and is privately owned today. The castle is a medieval rectangular building laid out around a patio.

It has kept the towers, a gate with Gothic arcades, the parade ground and a wooden porched corridor (16th century).

The Gothic bridge on the river and the Saranyana village, a populated ancient manor 4 km away from the town, must not be missed.

The Sant Cristòfol chapel is located there. There is also a hostel.

“Fiestas” and cuisine
La Todolella’s cuisine is closely linked to its festivities. The celebrations start with Sant Antoni or Santantoná, which is a religious and playful festivity with the staging of Sant Antoni Abad’s temptations. Les Tronques festivities are held in February. Their main event takes place on Carnival Sunday, with the roasting of meat in the town square and the subsequent auctioning to the public. Roast meat is a traditional dish, together with the casserole and the “pilotes de carn”.

The main festivities take place between the 20th and the 31st of August with bullfights, festivals and a warriors’ dance. The steps and the dresses of the dancers have ancient medieval roots.
