Also worthy of visit are the interesting remains of the ancient Roman settlement of Pujol de Banicató a few kilometres from the town centre. We should also highlight the curious Enrique Giner Medal Museum housed in the San Miguel hermitage known as El Fort, and the Nules History Museum housed in La Sangre church and which among other testimonies of the past conserves the Roman altar of Santa Bárbara and the carving of Sant Jaume.

What is Mascarell?
Just four kilometres from Nules we must visit the unusual parish called Mascarell, the only one that continues to be completely walled right into the 21st century. Its origins come from the settlement established by the Moors expelled from Burriana in the municipal district of the old castle of Nules. We reach this relic of the past – declared a national artistic monument in 1995 – through two gateways.

Shall we enjoy a fiesta?
We should highlight unusual fiestas such as that of Les Barraquetes and Els Fadrins dedicated to San Vicente. The first is celebrated on the day of the octave of Corpus and in the Plaza Mayor the youngsters construct their barracas (cane huts) with the passage of the procession of the Santísimo. In the fiesta of the Fadrins, however, the town’s bachelors and unmarried women ride on horseback or in decorated carriages, touring the streets and circling the traditional bonfire.

On June 13 the neighbourhood of San Juan fills with light and colour thanks to the San Juan bonfires. In August they celebrate the patron saint fiestas dedicated to San Bartolomé and in October those dedicated to the Virgen de la Soledad. Some of the town neighbourhoods also celebrate their own fiestas.

What is its cultural life like?
Among the diverse cultural activities carried out in Nules we should highlight the literary competitions and the Juegos Florales in which they award the “Flor Natural”, as well as the congresses on the history and philology of La Plana and those celebrated biannually on citrus fruit cultivation. The Agricultural Fair held in September is also very important, bringing together an extensive display of machinery and products related to agriculture.
