What should
we visit?
Taking a stroll we can approach the Calvary
and its 18th-century hermitage dedicated
to the Santísimo Cristo. Now only
the ruins remain of the Castle of Eslida,
a building of irregular polygonal layout
with a rectangular Torre del Homenaje. The
Arco de la Rambla over the Anna river is
also outstanding with its semicircular arches.
Another important monument is the Molino
del Aire where they formerly milled cereals.
The water from the municipal district’s
fountains is outstanding for its mineral
and medicinal value. We can find the fountains
of Fosques, Matilde, Castro, Fonillet and
San José, without forgetting other
places of interest such as the Barranc and
the Rei.
Narrow, twisting and very steep alleys
in the style of an Arabic Medina, with beautiful
corners adorned with ornamental flowers
and plants, make up the old town. We can
take a walk along typical streets such as
l’Arrendador, San Isidro, El Salvador,
San Ramón, La Porxet and Els Teixidors.
A must for a visit is the parish church
of El Salvador, from the end of the 17th
century, with a Corinthian style nave over
the remains of an Arabic mosque.
The Carrer de Baix marks off the limit
of the old town, and from then on there
are the successive extensions to the town
centre with wider and straight streets that
spread like a mantle towards the valley.
Its central point is the Calle San León,
patron saint of Eslida.
Shall we
enjoy a fiesta?
All the fiestas are markedly popular and
attract large crowds. On the weekend nearest
to January 17 they celebrate the festivity
of San Antonio. San León, patron
of Eslida, is celebrated on the Sunday after
Easter, and the following Monday is San
Vicente. In the last week of July there
are the youth festivals, with many fun and
popular events.
On the Sunday nearest to August 15 there
is the Mostra de productes d’Eslida
(trade fair). Finally, on the last Sunday
in August they celebrate the main fiestas
of the Santísimo Cristo del Calvario.
During the whole week there are fun and
religious events in which thousands of people
take part. |
