At 294 metres above the sea level and overlooking the Pla de l’Arc plain the town offers full of tourist potential: because of its history, which is reflected in every corner of its streets; because of its natural location and because of its privileged combination of mountain and sea, interior and coast. What else could we ask for?

All the findings suggest that Cabanes was founded in Roman times as a mansion on the reputed Via Augusta roman road which passed through these lands. A majestic roman arch that welcomes people into this several thousand years old town proves this.

Nevertheless, it was only populated in 1243, as a town belonging to Miravet autonomous district. Its strength caused the castles of Albalat and Miravet to annex to it in 1575.

2 km away from the town is a roman arch mentioned by Cavanilles after one of his trips. The arch was designated as a Historic and Artistic Monument in 1931.

There are various hypotheses with regard to its origin, but according to the most reliable one the arch was built to commemorate the victory of Captain Lucio Marcio over Carthaginians in 210 BC.

Our visit starts inside the wall remains, with Sitjar Gate and an old oven. The hospital has a beautiful 15th century exterior, contemporary with the Gothic palace at the plaza presided over by the church.

The palace serves as the town hall. The parish temple was built in the 17th century and is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Other religious buildings are Mare de Déu de l’Assumpció church and the emblematic Les Santes chapel, located on the outskirts of the town in a beautiful valley known as Les Santes mountain range. The ruins of the Miravet and Albalat castles are especially interesting for their history and emblematic character.

Very near the Prat de Cabanes Natural Park is La Sal tower, former defence tower from the times when the shore suffered continuous attacks by Berber pirates.

One festivity after another
Cabanes festivities start on January 17 with the festivity of San Antonio Abad. On the first Sunday of May the patron festivities honouring Our Lady of Buen Suceso virgin are held. San Pedro is celebrated on June 29. At the beginning of August there are also festivities in honour of Saint John the Baptist and San Roque. The calendar of festivities finishes in November with San Andrés Agricultural Exhibition, which displays the latest technological innovations in the agriculture and motor sectors.
