Native sports
Castellón is a land of rich traditions,
which can also be seen in its sports. The
ultimate Valencian sport is the native Valencian
ball, or “pilota” which dates
back to the Middle Ages. If playing is not
possible, we recommend at least watching
it when you have the chance. Burriana y
Vila-real are the two towns where it is
played most. Pilota is played outside on
long roads, mostly in the spring and summer
or during the festivities of each town.
It can also be played in enclosed facilities.
Pilota courts are known as “trinquetes”
and have a peculiar design, similar to frontons,
but narrower and smaller.Another ancient
sport is pigeon breeding, a curious tradition
based on the training of pigeons for sport.
“Pull and drag” is a show of
strength, where huge horses pull loaded
carts. In both sports, one of the main rules
is to respect the animals.
And also…
We have left for the end the most popular
and universal sports which can be played
in almost every town of Castellón.
There are comprehensive sports facilities,
such as: football pitches, basketball courts,
athletics tracks, tennis and pelota courts,
public swimming pools, etc.
